Frequently Asked Questions

The general concept is to include all performances in front of a live audience. Most obviously this covers public concerts, but also includes:
  1. Private concerts
  2. Benefits, award ceremony performances
  3. Live performances for TV or Internet broadcast, even if no in-studio audience
  4. Rehearsal for tours & TV broadcasts - preparations for public performance
  5. Soundchecks (if taped) - directly tied to public performances

  1. Traditional studio-type sessions, such as for albums or guest appearances
  2. Demos for copyright protection, e.g. Leeds Music Demos, Witmark Demos
  3. The Basement Tapes, which were not intended for public consumption and therefore we are treating as studio sessions
  4. Speech-only events, such as as interviews and award acceptances
  5. Back stage "noodling" since not a proper soundcheck for the concert
  6. Home tapes
  7. Soundchecks for which recordings are not available, as reported songs are not possible to verify

Not at this time but we are looking into it.

Event Types considered Public Performances are: Concert, TV, Radio, Benefit, Tribute, Award, Guest, Movie, and Internet. The non-Public ones are: Soundcheck, Rehearsal, and Private.

For searches and most reports, the format is YYYY-MM-DD (four-digit year, two-digit month, and two-digit date). For long-form date presentation, the United States format of "Month Day, Year" is used.

For an exact date, input the four-digit year, two-digit month, and two-digit date; for example 1998-06-20. Possible matches will show up as you type, just click on the one you want.

Since the search box shows partial matches for you to pick from, you can also search for year-and-month (e.g. 1998-06 for June 1998), the same month for all years (e.g. -06- for June), and month-and-day (-06-20 for June 20th).

Additionally, you can bring up a list of concerts for an entire decade by typing just "199" for the whole of the 1990s.

Yes, you can type in any of city, state (or province), or country and get a list of results to select from. For example, to find all cities in Pennsylvania where Dylan has performed, just type in that state name.

While an early design decision was made to remove character accents in order to simplify searches, the plan is to restore these throughout.

Some search result tables have a Filter box. Anything you type into it will be used to display only table rows that match what you typed.

Examples: "2010" to show only performances in that year; "199" to show only performances from 1990 to 1999; "Rehearsal" to show only this type of event; "1975 Texas" to show only events in that year and in that state.

You can click on the up/down arrows to sort a column in ascending or descending order. You can apply this approach to multiple columns by holding down the Shift key while clicking on arrows.
